我先在這里跟大家討論狗糧中的含有 Menadione 和 Ethoxyquin 的壞處，希望你們能自己選擇一隻適合自己狗狗的狗糧。

但請記着，天下沒有一種最好的狗糧，衹有一些是比較適合你狗狗的。

Menadione 和 Ethoxyquin 可說是天然狗糧中兩大隱藏殺手，它們會一點一滴積聚在狗隻體內，經年歷月，後遺症禍害難以估計。

Menadione維生素K3，沒有深入研究的朋友，就說在狗糧配方中看到有註明 " "a source of vitamin K activity" or "vitamin K supplement"." 也不會怎樣担心吧，誰知道這Menadione Vitamin K3 是一種廉價而有害的人工合成物質，因為 Menadione 正確來說它並不是任何Vitamin。

而 Ethoxyquin 這防腐劑更是殺狗於無形，我們又難以一一追查得到，請看下文。

首先，大家不要誤解，Vitamin K不是不好，Vitamin K是用來補血的，一般貧血的狗隻，獸醫都會打針注射 Vitamin K。

Vitamin K1 衹是一種天然的化合物(來源一般從Phylloquinone, 植物、蔬菜如：西蘭花、波菜等)
而Vitamin K2 (Menaquinone, 是由綜合細菌而消化再由身體吸收的一種無害物質)
但Menadione Vitamin K3 則是廉價而有害的一種人工合成物質，因為Menadione 正確來說它並不是任何Vitamin。

狗糧內含menadione（Vitarmin K3）的危險性以前曾經研究了兩天兩夜，發覺很多標榜天然狗糧的牌子，都有 menadione sodium bisulfate, menadione sodium bisulfite or menadione dimethylpyrimidinol bisulfite (Vitamin K3) 這些物質，小心啊，對狗狗害處很大的。

這些物質在狗糧包裝上通常用以下文字標示：

menadione sodium bisulfate
menadione sodium bisulfite
menadione dimethylpyrimidinol bisulfite
"a source of vitamin K activity"
"vitamin K supplement"

為着行文方便，我們 (包括Mordanna原著) 或有將它簡稱："Menadione" 或 "維生素K3" 或 "維他命K3" 或 "VK3" 。

為什麼 menadione 這是壞?

導致cytotoxicity 在肝臟細胞裡

關于Menadione食用前要考慮的事情：

未被具體地研究卻被批准了長期使用, 如在寵物食品裡

許多歐洲國家巳禁止了 Menadione 用於人的食物裡，基於它的副作用, 可導致包括嚴重的永久損傷和死亡

糧食與藥物管理局禁止了綜合性維生素K，因為它的高毒性

維生素K1 和K2 代謝通過淋巴系統, 運用胰臟酵素和膽汁酸和由肝臟調控。維生素K3 卻是直接地被動物身體吸收和繞過體內自然路踁和新陳代謝系統。

我們可以肯定 Vitmain K3 及其化合物的確有一定的毒性。雖說大部份非反芻動物要服用超過1000倍他們所需的 Vitamin K3 才會中毒（據筆者搜集到的資料，一般有使用 Vitamin K3 而又自願列出其含量的狗糧通常含有5-10倍狗隻所需的 Vitamin K 份量），但並沒有任何研究指出貓狗若長期食用這種份量的 Vitamin K3 對健康究竟有多大的損害（因到目前為止，最類似的研究結果指出若狗隻連續 4-33 日服用 25-50mg/Kg body weight 的 Vitamin K3 便會出現貧血的症狀。其他有關食用 Vitamin K3 的研究均利用小雞或老鼠）。

但請注意以上天然狗糧中，有部份含有魚肉、魚肉粉，內�埵釦_ Ethoxyquin 這對狗狗有害的防腐劑；因為美國法例規定在一般非人類食用級別的魚肉、魚肉粉運送前都要添加 Ethoxyquin 防腐劑，因此在狗糧製造商收到魚肉、魚肉粉前巳有可能下了 Ethoxyquin 防腐劑，我們亦根本無可能全部追查清楚，衹能盡量避免配方內有魚肉、魚肉粉。

其實 Ethoxyquin 是另外一個比 Menadione VK3更頭痛的問題。因為它是真正的隱藏殺手！

Ethoxyquin 其實是一種抗氧化劑，使用後可防止狗糧變壞 要提醒大家，美國法例（好可能加拿大的法例也一樣），規定假如生產商使用化學防腐劑，必須在包裝上列明，但如果生產商在購入生產材料(包括動物、穀物）時，其中已含有化學物質，他們就不必加以說明。事實上極有道理相信ethoxyqui化學防腐劑或多或少一定存在於狗糧之中,當然要逐一追查並不容易也需要一點時間. 為什麼現階段只覑眼於狗糧中的魚類製品.  因為發現有相關法例規定所有非人類食用級別的魚類製品在運送過程中都必須加入防腐劑Ethoxyquin.

事實上我也感到無奈。要選擇dry dog food, 如何可以做到比較安全. 我想首先要避免有害物質於主要成份(primary ingredients)中出現.

關於狗糧中fishmeal含有Ethoxyquin的問題, 最後可以99%++肯定這論點是正確的•

魚肉粉大致可分成兩大類
1. 用你同我食完魚之後的殘餘物做成 – 例子 salmon meal, tuna meal
2. 用你同我都唔會食的魚做成 - 例子 fish meal, white fish meal, herring meal, anchovy meal or menhaden meal

第一類會稱是人用食物级數(human graded)因為係用大家食完留下來的東西來做, 不過它是副產品(by-products). 而第二類不是副產品但它不是人用食物级數, 當然不是人用食物级數, 監管自然沒有那樣嚴格.

根據美國食物及藥物檢定局(FDA)規定Ethoxyquin於人用食物中的最高值為0.5ppm而放於寵物上為150ppm是人類可吸收的300倍. 這一點實在不可相信. 大概10年前在美國曾有狗隻進食含有Ethoxyquin的狗糧6個月後, 患上肝癌而死亡. 而狗糧生產商也逐漸放棄採用Ethoxyquin為狗糧的防腐劑.

Ethoxyquin其實是一種殺蟲藥, LD50(lethal dose to 50% of population)測試值為800-1750mg,  以下是幾種最普遍寵物藥物的LD50測試值(數目越大代表毒性越少)

Frontline/Frontline plus – 2995mg/kg
Revolution – 1600mg/kg
Heartgard – 50mg/kg

可想而知 Ethoxyquin的毒性其實比Frontline還要強, Frontline每月只用一次, 狗糧中有 Ethoxyquin, 後果會非常嚴重.

一線曙光, FAO說明因為white fishmeal中油的份量較少, 可以不用抗氧化劑, 真的要選用鱼的狗糧, white fishmeal似乎是最後亦是唯一選擇. 但我也不會選.

如果選用有鱼的狗糧是為了多點omega-3, 這確是一個誤會. 要知超過90%的omega-3都會在高温的狗糧生產過程中流失. 要確保有適量的omega-3,我會直接加進omega-3補充品於每日食糧之中. 而 omega-3補充品, 可選人用的野生纯三文魚油(Pure wild salmon oil)為首選, 一般以1000mg粒裝出售, 1000mg 足夠20-25磅犬隻一天所需.

這只是我的一點建議, 什麽是你的最後決定… 希望大家有空可以分享一下.

仲有一樣補充: 補充omega-3，應該而essential fatty acid含量，唔係omega-3含量。一粒1000mg omega-3 capsule，通常有120mg DHA, 180mg EPA, 所以其實只得300mg essential fatty acid (EFA's). 建議劑量係大約35-50mg EFA's/lb. so, if i pick a middle figure say 40mg/lb, 25 lb would need 1000mg EFA, which equals to 3-4 capsules. 所以，我一直都係餵liquid form, 貪佢抵d 阿嘛。

好似18兄話齌，因為魚油氧化，所以食開魚油亦應該食埋維他命 E，份量大約係4-5 IU/lb。之前食如油時，會隔日俾粒200 IU capsule 俾bb食(因為比較小人食維他命E有100iu一粒)，依家食Sea Pet，已經有埋維他命E lu，方便d啦。

few months ago i visited the highboy's forum and noted the issue. i was quite confused by then.

and i called the manufactureres of innova, timberwolf and solid gold regarding the ethoxyquin concern, naturapet (innova) and timberwolf indicated that they use whole, table quality fish. the reason they didn't put the words of "human grade" in their website was that the fish itself was human grade but when ground the fish to fish meal, according to inspection regulations, it's illegal to state the (lamb/chicken/fish/turkey) meal was human grade as no such thing for human consumption - "The meat starts out as human grade because remember it is from an inspected plant, but does not receive an inspection sticker because it (lamb meal, chicken meal, turkey meal and fish meal) is not intended for human consumption so cannot be labeled as human grade. " the conclusion is that the fish they put in is human grade and without ethoxyquin.

and that's why i stick on these few brands (which without k3) periodically.

digi, what you described above is generally accepted as the definition of meat-based meal such as what you quoted lamb meal, turkey meal, chicken meal etc… as both human and dog are also eats lamb/turkey/chicken.
However, for fish meal, it is much easier to distinguish, in fact fish meal could be classified into two groups

1. Processing waste - use the by-products of human-graded fish to process, such as salmon meal, tuna meal.

2. Industrial fishery - fish is caught only for industrial purpose which is not consumed by human such as fish meal, white fish meal, herring meal, anchovy meal or menhaden meal.

Therefore whenever the 2nd group ingredient is shown in the ingredient list, it must be non human-graded i.e. has ethoxyquin.

it took me a while to finish the article. hau, the writer is from UK but it applies to US as well? as far as i learn from internet and books, UK and US have quite different standard in processing pet food.

結論是衹有以下11種比較容易購買的天然狗糧，不含/已删除/即將删除 Menadione 維生素 K3 極有害物質而又原料配方絕無機會/得到廠方書面證實絕不含有 Ethoxyquin：

Canidae：配方全面營養均衡，猤含Menadione VK3、 Ethoxyquin防腐劑，安全放心。
仲有隻近期好好的新產品：The Perfect Lamb and Rice Dry ：對有雞肉、玉米、麥子、大豆、麵粉敏感的狗隻，或患皮膚發炎症的狗兒而設，非常適合
不含玉米、小麥及大豆；加入木瓜酵素、紫花苜蓿芽菜、黑麴益菌有助分解肉類蛋白質，清除體內毒素，不會導致皮膚及食物敏感

Innova：有一段時間因為懷疑Innova配方內的魚肉有Ethoxyquin防腐劑，不敢介紹網友選購它，幾日前有網友stelleif
熱心幫忙去信，並得到回覆說他們的魚肉是人類食用級數的，這應或可比較安心了。(但請注意，版友反映此糧貨源極不穩定。)

EVO：是沒有五殼的，對五殼敏感的狗隻，就最好不過

California Natural：配方用料非常簡單，一定要添加補充品 (但對皮膚容易敏感的狗隻反而是好事），但補充品的添加，是一門比研究狗糧更深的學問，不是一般狗主能做到。

Karma：95%有機配方 (但配方內有鹽）

Healthwise(但配方內有牛油菓油，因此不被建議選用)

Natural Balance： 部份產品線 - (ULTRA PREMIUM DRY DOG FOOD，REDUCED CALORIE FORMULA，VEGETARIAN FORMULA，VENISON & BROWN RICE FORMULA) ：配方用料比較廉價，在我心目中屬次班優質狗糧

關於Ethoxyquin, 其實係特區成立前我都講過喇. 這是那一批每天花不少於四個鐘去跟狗糧生產商討論的美國人的共識, 而並不是什麽官方答案. 要確認那一隻狗糧沒有Ethoxyquin只有兩種方法.

1. 整個生產過程都是同一狗糧生產商負責, 冇out sourcing, 冇OEM. 當然這生產商會100%知道/控制/監督每一生產環節. 有這實力而又生產天然糧的公司只有兩間, Natura 同 Natures Variety.

2. 產品經由FDA批核的化驗所作定期檢查, 我到目前為止都唔覺有邊隻狗糧有這樣做. 反而supplement就有.

highboy, 講番 Natures Variety 可以放心喎. 因為Natures Variety不單生產乾狗糧, 它有泠凍食物的生產線. Mordanna的查證話Natures Variety用的各類鱼肉粉或鱼油包括Menhaden Fish,  Salmon Oil都係"cold processed" 情況跟Grizzly salmon oil 相似. 在密封低温的生產線生產, 解決抗氧化的問題.

既然實發兄有可靠資料來源顯示Natures Variety 的魚肉、魚油安全，今天內我會update ████ 狗糧的抉擇 ████ ，把它歸納為 "容易購買的天然狗糧，已删除 Menadione 維生素 K3 而又原料配方得到資料來源顯示不含有 Ethoxyquin" 的組別內。

is specific to that area. As an example, we focus more on the fact that
the salmon is wild here, and the preservatives that are questioned most
here.
The food in Hong Kong is the same as here, and yes it is ethoxyquin
free.

mixture of natural tocopherols with rosemary. This is the only Coast Guard
approved natural preservative for fish meal.

以下討論英文成份表中最常見的幾項成份及比較﹕

Meat（肉）與 MeatMeal（肉粉）
美國動物保護協會強烈質疑寵物食品中所使用的肉粉之來源與品質，故推薦消費者盡量使用含完整肉類的寵物食品。比如說﹕chicken（雞肉）就此chickenmeal（雞肉粉）高級。API 甚至勸大眾別用含有by-products（副產品）或by-oducts meal(副產品粉）的產品。〔按：儘管API 所倡導的理想有其立場，筆者在此仍須再次強調"一分錢、一分貨"的觀念--原料較高級的產品售價必定較高﹔於經濟能力範圍內選擇最佳產品才是最合理的作法。〕

以下為AAFCO（美國動物飼糧管理協會）對肉及其相關產品所下的定義﹕
■ Meat（肉）
　　肉為乾淨、新鮮，由動物屠體骨架所分離的骨骼肌或由舌頭、橫膈、心臟、食道所分離的條紋肌﹔正常所連附的皮膚、腱、脂肪、神經及血管可以接受俏如欲標示特定肉類，如Lamb（小羊肉）、Beef（牛肉）及Chicken（雞肉），必須確實來自其相對的動物種類。

■ Poultry (禽肉)
　　禽肉為由禽類屠體所分離出乾淨的肉與皮的混合物﹔可附帶骨，但不可含羽毛、頭、腳及內臟。標示特定品種的禽肉必須確實來自相對的禽種。

■ Meat Meal（肉粉）：如 lambmeal（小羊肉粉）
　　肉粉為除血液、毛髮、蹄、角、胃及瘤胃內容物..等以外的已搾油之乾燥動物組織。不可含有外物。如欲標示特定肉類，必須確實來自其相對的動物種類。除此之外，其鈣磷比、蛋白質消化率必須符合適合寵物食品製造的標準。

■ Poultry Meal（禽肉粉）：如 chicken meal（雞肉粉）
　　禽肉粉為乾燥、已搾油過、由禽類屠體所分離出乾淨的肉與皮的混合物﹔可附帶骨，但不含羽毛、頭、腳及內臟。標示特定品種的禽肉必須來自相對的禽種。

■ Meat and Bone Meal（肉骨粉）
　　肉骨粉為除血液、毛髮、蹄、角、皮渣、糞、胃及瘤胃內容物...等以外的已搾油乾燥帶骨動物組織。不可含有外物。如欲標示特定肉類，必須來自其相對的動物種類。除此之外，其鈣磷比、蛋白質消化率必須符合適合寵物食品製造的標準。

■ Meat By-products（肉類副產品）
　　肉類副產品為由屠體分離出未搾油、乾淨的"肉以外之部分"。可包括肺、脾、腎、腦、肝、血、骨、部分去脂低溫脂肪組織、及胃腸（去除內容物）。不含毛、角、牙及蹄。如欲標示特定肉類副產品，必須來自其相對的動物種類。

■ Poultry By-products（禽類副產品）
　　禽類副產品必須含有未搾油過、由禽類屠體所分離出乾淨的頭、腳、內臟。但不可含糞便及外物-除非是處理過程中無法避免之微量可接受雜質。

■ Poultry By-product Meal（禽類副產品粉）
　　禽類副產品粉包含磨成粉狀、搾過油的部份禽類屠體，如頸、腳、未成形蛋、腸。不含羽毛，除非是良好處理過程中無法避免的微量可接受雜質。鈣磷比必須符合適合寵物食品製造的標準。

■ Animal By-product Meal（動物副產品粉）
　　動物副產品粉為已搾油後的動物組織﹔不包括毛、蹄、角、皮渣、糞、胃及瘤胃內容物。除非是良好處理過程中無法避免的微量可接受雜質。此一成份係為涵蓋無法達到前述成份標準的動物組織而設立，因此無法標示特定動物組織種類。

　　
讀者可以發現，
以上九種動物性原料都可以提供寵物食品中最重要的蛋白質，
但是其部位及要求的品質卻可以相差如此之鉅。
總而言之，其中最珍貴的可以說是「肉或禽肉」，
因其為新鮮、不含內臟、頭、腳、羽毛...等的純肉﹔
等而次之的是「肉粉或禽肉粉」，此為已搾油過的乾燥肉﹔
再次為「肉骨粉」，不但搾過油，而且帶骨﹔更次為「肉類或禽類副產品」，
為將肉類剔除後所剩餘之物﹔「肉類或禽類副產品粉」則是進一步再將肉類或禽類副產品的油搾出後的產物﹔
而「動物副產品粉」可能是其中最價廉的成份了。
因此消費者在購買寵物食品時，實在應該花一點時間確認其原料的優劣，才不至於花冤枉錢。

　　
選用「肉或禽肉」的超高級產品在世界上可以說是寥寥無幾，
而且價位並不可人。目前市售的高級寵物乾顆粒食品多採用「肉粉或禽肉粉」作為動物性蛋白的來源，
因其為合理價位中所能負擔的最高級肉類產品，而且品質也相當穩定。
至於以廉價銷售為主要策略的品牌多選擇「副產品（粉）」以降低成本。
一般來說，能明確標示出動物種類的肉類產品較為高級。

接下來我們將繼續討論寵物食品中的穀類、防腐劑、如何辨識有效使用期限以及包裝標示上應注意的小地方。

■穀類（Grain）
穀類的消化率取決於其養份可用率。以白米（rice）來說，犬貓幾乎可將其中的碳水化合物完全吸收。其它的穀類，如：小麥（wheat）、豆類（bean）及燕麥（oats），就不如米來得好吸收。馬鈴薯（potato）及玉米（corn）的吸收率也此米差。因此寵物食品中所採用的穀物種類及此例均會影響其消化利用率。某些成份，如花生麩（peanut hull），—點營養價值也沒有，簡直是填充劑！﹝按﹕這是一個錯誤的觀念，所有的均衡食品中都必須包含適量的纖維素以促進腸胃蠕動。穀麩（hull）能提供良好的天然纖維素及額外的熱能。

　　
現代的寵物因普適缺乏運動更需要攝取纖維素。當然，過量的纖維素也是不必要的。米確實是最易消化吸收的穀類，但其它的穀物亦各有特色，如﹕玉米含豐富的植物性蛋白﹔豆類可取代肉類來製造犬用素食品﹔馬鈴薯能提供純度99％以上的澱粉，非常適合製作用來治療食物過敏的食物。﹞

■ 防腐劑（Prcservatives）
　　BHA、BHT、衣索金（Ethoxyquin）及混合生育酊（mixedtocopherols）可防止脂肪酸敗，為寵物食品中最常用的防腐劑。其中混合生育酊（即維生素E）為天然防腐劑。衣索金可能是最穩定的防腐劑之一，但始終缺乏使用於寵物食品的安全報告。選用天然防腐劑可更加減少寵物食品中所添加的化學成份。有些天然防腐劑的保存期限比化學防腐劑短，選購時應注意其有效期限。以天然防腐劑保鮮的寵物食品通常可保存九個月。故每次購買時，應聞一下氣味以確定新鮮度。必要時，可向原購買處要求換貨。

如果寵物突然拒食常吃的食品，除了懷疑其身體不適以外，亦須注意是否食料不新鮮。有些貓甚至會作出欲將食物掩埋的動作（貓掩埋糞便的特有動作）。﹝按﹕維生素E及C是最常見的天然防腐劑。其它較常見的天然防腐劑尚有檸檬酸（citric acid）及迷迭香（rosemary）。早期天然防腐劑的確較不穩定、所能提供的保存期限較短﹔但以目前最新的技術而言，天然防腐劑已能提供長達一年半的保存期限，完全不輸給化學防腐劑。天然防腐劑的使用成本較高，多為高級寵物食品所採用。﹞

如何選擇合適狗糧!


美國動物保護協會（Animal ProtectionInstitute，API）推薦選購寵物食品的標準及建議﹕


（一)首先確定產口標示上有 AAFCO認證(這是指美國產品而言)
。
AAFCO 為 Assocciation of merican Feed Control Officials-美國飼糧管理協會之縮寫﹔其所認證的寵物食品大致符合 NRC（National Research Council）的標準﹞

（二)不要選擇使用肉骨粉、副產品的產品。

（API 認為寵物也有權利享用與人類同等級的肉類。而廉價飼料為節省成本，多使用肉骨粉、副產品濟能力許可的話，盡量選擇使用真
正肉類的產品。）

（三）肉類最好是第一成份。

（按照 慣例排名愈前面的成份所佔的份量愈多。"肉多即是好"的說法並不一定正確﹔舉例來說﹕成犬所需的蛋白質較低，肉類並不必非為第一成份不可﹔老年犬及肥胖犬甚至更應進一步降低其肉類攝取量。）

(四）看看其中所使用的穀類成份，米是最容易消化的穀物。
如果玉米成份太多，請考慮其它品牌。（事 實上玉米也是很好的穀類，但其所含離肢酸過低，必須額外添加﹔且使用過多的話可能不易消化）

（五）API 推薦使用天然防腐劑的食品。
天然防腐劑有混合生育酊、維生素C及E，化學防腐劑有 Ethoxyquin，BHT及BHA。（—般認為化學防腐劑可能影響健康﹔反之，維生素C及E不但可取代化學防腐劑，更對健康有益。）

（六）檢查有效期限。
拆封的時候，記得聞一下氣味以確定新鮮。 必要時向原購買商店退換。(一般生產進口廠商都能接受剛拆封產品的退換貨)

（七）開始更改品牌時，先混合三分之一的新產品與三分之二的舊產品。
然後每天增加一點新產品的比例，直到完全取代為止；如此可避免不必要的腸胃不適。 (絕大部分的換食不良反應皆起因於此。)

(八）換食時請注意寵物的排泄物。
糞便應該實而不硬，且沒有刺鼻臭味。(換食時糞便惡臭代表消化系統一時無法適應新產品，通常短期內會回復正常。)

（九）觀察寵物的皮毛及體重。
確定新產品符合寵物的個體需求，不會導致體重過度增減。（寵物的皮毛 、 是營養狀態最敏感的指標﹔換食時皮毛失去光澤、晦暗、乾燥即可能表示產品營養成份不當。皮膚劇癢、發疹可能為食物過敏。換食後的體重變化為重要的判斷依據﹔更換較高級飼料後最常見到寵物體重 大增，這是因營養成份較高的緣故，請務必依包裝上的指示來減少餵食量﹔反之，如果體重下降則需要較多餵食量來維持正常體重。）

（十）不要因趕時髦而選用誇大不實的產品。
將寵物食品儲存於密封容器中，置於陰涼乾燥處。除了適當的營養外，務必全日提供寵物新鮮的飲用水、適量的運動及全心的愛護。

不知到底應該給牠吃多少食物的時候可以用卡路里來計算。不但減重時可以用，也可以做為平常生活的參考標準。

一.例如 : 體重34kg的大型犬

1.將狗的體重(kg)乘以3次 (34x34x34=39304)
2.再將1.的答案開根號 (=198.252)
3.再將2.的答案開根號 (=14.0
4.將3.的答案乘以125 (=1760)
需要的卡路里為1760kcal
*不太散步的狗狗請在4.的地方乘以100。

二.上述的狗所需要的狗食量的計算方法
例如: 以100g為400kcal的狗食來看

1.需要的卡路里除以狗食公克數的卡路里
1760 / 400 =4.4
2.將1的答案乘以包裝上所記載的克數
4.4x100=440
1日所需要的狗食的量=440g

狗食的包裝上都記載著成份分析表，而且通常也標明了卡路里。一般都是以100g為計算單位，不過其中也有用10g, 200g來標示的，在計算狗食量的時候一定要看清楚。此外，除了卡路里外，如果沒有標示成分的狗食會令人擔心使用原料的問題，最好避免購買這種產品.

Selecting a Commercial Pet Food

Commercial pet food is a great convenience for busy caregivers. You want the best for your companion animals, but with a bewildering array of foods and claims to choose from, how do you decide what’s best for your animals?

Standards for Ingredients

The pet food industry is huge and extremely profitable ($25 billion a year in revenue worldwide). While manufacturers may appear to have the best interests of your companion animals at heart, they are generally more concerned about their stock prices and bottom lines. This may be especially true of pet food manufacturers owned by large, diverse, multinational parent companies. What this means to you is that if an inexpensive ingredient is available to replace a costlier one, many companies will make the substitution to save money. A few companies pride themselves on their “fixed formulas,” meaning that they always use the same ingredients. This may be good ... if the ingredients are of acceptable quality to begin with.

Pet food may be labeled as “complete and balanced” if it meets the standards set by a group called AAFCO, the Association of American Feed Control Officials. These standards were formulated in the early 1990s by panels of canine and feline nutrition experts. A food may be certified in two ways: (1) by meeting AAFCO’s published standards for content (“Nutrient Profiles”), or (2) by passing feeding tests or trials. While most researchers agree that feeding tests are superior in assessing the nutritional adequacy of a food, clinical experience as well as scientific studies have confirmed that even foods that pass feeding trials may still be inadequate for long-term maintenance. Also keep in mind that the standards set only “minimums” and “maximums,” not “optimums.” Commercial foods are designed to be adequate for the average animal, but not all foods will be suitable for an individual animal’s variable needs.

Problems

Commercial pet foods and some pet food ingredients have been implicated in a number of diseases in companion animals. Allergic skin disease, obesity, food intolerance, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic ear infections, cystitis (bladder inflammation), bladder and kidney stones, certain heart diseases, pancreatitis, feline hyperthyroidism, hip dysplasia, canine mammary cancer, bloat, and diabetes all have nutritional components — that is, nutritional factors are suspected or known to play a role in inducing or perpetuating these diseases. Thus, it is crucial that we, as caregivers, pay close attention to what we are feeding our animals and how they are reacting to the food.

One potential problem with commercial pet food is pesticide residues, antibiotics, and molds contained in pet food ingredients. Meat from sick animals may be loaded with drugs, some of which are known to pass unchanged through all the processing done to create a finished pet food (such as penicillin and pentobarbital). Between 1995 and 1999, there were two major recalls of dry dog food by different manufacturers due to mold contamination of grain ingredients. Some fungal toxins are very dangerous. The second recalled food killed more than 20 dogs.

Another problem is the unpredictable quality of common pet food ingredients. By-products, by-product meal, meat and bone meal, and similar ingredients can vary widely in their nutrient composition. Bone meals in the U.S. have had a lead contamination problem for many years. The protein in a meal containing a large amount of bone may be poorly digestible and fail to provide adequate nutrition, even though chemical analysis will reveal an acceptable amount of amino acids.

One of the biggest problems with commercial foods is the processing they undergo. Meals are rendered (cooked) at moderate to high temperatures for hours. Extruded foods pass through a steam heat/high pressure device that allows them to “puff” into kibble shapes when they come out of the machine. Even though they move through the extruder quickly, the extreme conditions may alter or damage some nutrients.

Pet food manufacturers are aware of these factors, and most add sufficient extra vitamins, minerals and other nutrients to compensate for losses in the manufacturing process. However, because the AAFCO profiles set only minimums for many nutrients, tests have shown that some minerals may be added to the food in excessive amounts.

Pet Food Shopping Checklist

The most reputable manufacturers of “superpremium” and “natural” foods agree with holistic veterinarians and other experts that the very best diet for your animal companion is one that you make yourself. A homemade diet, carefully balanced nutritionally and using organic foods, is closest to what Mother Nature intended. However, many of us do not have the time or energy to do home cooking, especially for multiple animals or large dogs.

For those of us who rely, partially or entirely, on commercial foods for our animals, API has prepared a checklist to use in selecting a good-quality diet.

Our extensive research has revealed that the pet food industry is extremely secretive. Manufacturers will not disclose very much information about the sources of ingredients, how they are processed, their quality control standards, or, in some cases, even where the food is made. Because the forty-odd manufacturers we contacted failed to provide us with accurate information, this API checklist gives you, the consumer, the best chance of selecting the best foods among the choices available.

When selecting a commercial food for your animal companion, make sure the label has an “AAFCO guarantee,” preferably one that references “feeding tests” or “feeding protocols” rather than Nutrient Profiles.
Never buy a food containing “by-product meal” or “meat and bone meal.” These rendered products are the most inexpensive sources of animal protein. The contents and quality of these meals can vary tremendously from batch to batch, and are not a reliable source of nutrition for your animal.
In general, avoid foods that rely on by-products as the sole source of animal protein. By-products consist of organs and parts either not desired, or condemned, for human consumption. An occasional can of by-product-based food may be okay, since, in the wild, carnivores do consume the whole prey including the organs, but these foods are not acceptable as a steady diet.
Look for a named meat or meal (“lamb” or “chicken meal,” for example, instead of the generic term “meat”) as the first ingredient.
Avoid generic or store brands. These may be repackaged rejects from the big manufacturers, and generally contain cheaper — and consequently poorer quality — ingredients.
Unless specifically recommended by your veterinarian, avoid “light,” “senior,” “special formula,” or “hairball formula” foods. These foods may contain acidifying agents, excessive fiber, or inadequate fats that can result in skin, coat and other problems.
In general, select brands promoted to be “natural.” While they are not perfect, they may be better than most. Several brands are now preserved with Vitamins C and E instead of chemical preservatives (such as BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin and propyl gallate). While synthetic preservatives may still be present, the amounts will be less.
Check the expiration date to ensure freshness.
When you open a bag of dry food, give it a sniff — if there is any rancid odor at all, return it immediately for an exchange or refund.
Store dry pet food in a sealed non-porous container (a large popcorn tin is ideal) in a cool, dry place. Canned food is best removed from the can and refrigerated in a glass or ceramic container.
Guidelines for Feeding Your Animal Companion

Change brands or flavors of dry food every three to four months to avoid deficiencies or excesses of ingredients which may be problematic for your animal.
When changing dry foods, mix 1/4 of the new food with 3/4 of the old food, and increase the new food a little each day. Some finicky animals may need a more gradual change over two or more weeks. Never let a cat skip more than one or two meals; return to the old food if necessary.
With any new food or supplement, watch for subtle changes in your dog’s skin and coat, appetite, energy level, mood, itchiness, discharges or odors, body weight, and the size and consistency of stool. If negative changes occur, try a different food. If the change persists, consult your veterinarian.
If your animal companion is on a prescription diet, check with your veterinarian periodically (at least every 6 months) to make sure the diet is still correct. Many conditions resolve over time, and a diet that was needed for a younger animal may be inappropriate when she is older.
It is usually preferable to feed one or two meals per day rather than leaving food out all the time. However, some medical conditions require more frequent feeding. Check with your veterinarian about recommendations for your animals.
Feed some canned food, which generally contains more animal protein and less grain than dry foods. Plain dry food does not clean the teeth and is not an essential for either cats or dogs. Cats in particular need at least 50% of their diet in the form of wet food to reduce the workload on the kidneys and keep the urine dilute. Cats with a history of bladder or kidney disease should not be fed any dry food.
Supplement all commercial pet foods with other foods, such as organic meats and steamed, pureed or finely grated vegetables (most cannot be very well digested by carnivores raw). Dogs may be supplemented with tofu and cooked grains; however, cats should receive minimal carbohydrates in the diet. (Plant products tend to raise urine pH and may predispose cats to urinary tract disease.) If you are supplementing more than 15-20% of the diet, however, you will need to consult one of the many available books or websites for information on balancing vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.
Other helpful supplements that are especially important when feeding commercial food include probiotics such as acidophilus, digestive enzymes, and the antioxidant vitamins E (alpha tocopherol) and C (either Ester C, calcium ascorbate, or sodium ascorbate).
Consider making at least some of your animal’s food at home. This lets you control the quality of the ingredients. There are many excellent books, articles, and websites available for more detailed guidelines on ingredients, proportions, and preparations. Even one or two home-made meals a week will be a significant improvement over feeding solely commercial pet foods.
Your veterinarian only sees your companion once a year. Since you are with her every day, it is essential that you monitor her general health and how she is responding to the food she’s eating. Changes in appetite, coat quality, weight, stool, urine, or water consumption may signal a problem with the food, or a more serious medical problem. Report these or any other unusual changes or behaviors to your veterinarian.

Vegetarian Pet Foods

Dogs and cats are classified as carnivores, but many dogs can thrive on a vegetarian diet. There are several vegetarian and even vegan pet foods available which are supplemented with nutrients unavailable in plants. Your dog might do very well with one of these diets, or even with a balanced homemade vegetarian diet. However, you should watch your dog carefully for problems such as a dull coat, dandruff, low energy, diarrhea, or other symptoms. It can take months or even years for a deficiency to develop.

Cats have very specific metabolic requirements for several nutrients found only in animal products, such as taurine, pre-formed Vitamin A (they cannot convert the plant precursor, beta-carotene), and arachadonic acid. They may not be able to adequately digest some plant-based proteins. There is at least one product marketed as a feline supplement for vegetarian diets, but these nutrients are chemically synthesized or highly purified, and may lack the enzymes and co-factors needed for optimal absorption and function. The long-term implications of these supplements are unknown. Therefore, API does not recommend that cats be fed a strictly vegetarian diet.

Pet Food Label "Rules"

The 95% Rule: If the product says “Salmon Cat Food” or “Beef Dog Food,” 95% of the product must be the named ingredients. A product with a combination label, such as “Beef and Liver for Dogs,” must contain 95% beef and liver, and there must be more beef than liver, since beef is named first.
The 25% or “Dinner” Rule: Ingredients named on the label must comprise at least 25% of the product but less than 95%, when there is a qualifying “descriptor” term like “dinner,” “entree,” “formula,” “platter,” “nuggets,” etc. In “Beef Dinner for Dogs,” beef may or may not be the primary ingredient. If two ingredients are named (“Beef and Turkey Dinner for Dogs”), the two ingredients must total 25%, there must be more of the first ingredient (beef) than the second (turkey), and there must be at least 3% of the lesser ingredient.
The 3% or “With” Rule: A product may be labeled “Cat Food with Salmon” if it contains at least 3% of the named ingredient.
The “Flavor” Rule: A food may be labeled “Turkey Flavor Cat Food” even if the food does not contain such ingredients, as long as there is a “sufficiently detectable” amount of flavor. This may be derived from meals, by-products, or “digests” of various parts from the animal species indicated on the label.

精明的消費者
今期為大家揭露一些令人非常震驚的報告。記得我曾說過「You are what you eat」的真理嗎？我們的仔仔囡囡每一日每一餐都食我們為他（她）們挑選的狗糧及小食，我認為每位愛犬人士都可以做個更精明的消費者。我們不需要是位獸醫，亦不需要是位專家才可對狗糧有更深入的了解。而在這�堿陘j家揭露的事實，可以增加對各類狗糧產品的認識。

狗糧的廣告
大家無論在電視或刊物看到有關狗糧的廣告，都必定標榜是新鮮和好味道，有些罐頭濕糧或袋裝半濕糧（semi-moist）外表更似新鮮肉（大多呈現鮮紅或啡紅色），簡直差一點連人都想食。各位有否想過狗糧生產商需要加添甚麼額外的材料，才可把產品保持很長的「最佳使用（食用）期」（best before date）和狗糧的濃烈香味（和誘人的賣相）??

化學物質??
事實上，狗糧市場（在香港或更明顯在美國、加拿大）是一門十分十分大的生意，有報告認為美國人花費在寵物食糧上的金額，比嬰兒食品高出 4倍之多。而生產商之間競爭亦很利害，競爭其中一個主要因素當然是產品的價錢，而這因素最直接受影響的是令很多生產商需要使用廉價的材料；使用廉價和質素差的材料，當然需要使用不同的化學物質改善狗糧的味道和賣相。

防腐劑計時炸彈
說到這�塈痟N由防腐劑開始，我個人拒絕給含防腐劑的任何食物給我倆個囡囡食。但眼看市面上很多流行牌子的狗糧都含防腐劑。你們可能認為少許的防腐劑對狗狗的健康未必會有不良的影響，但事實並非如此……試想想人類一世只吃含防腐劑的罐頭、即食麵等精製食物，對身體各主要功能會造成一定的負面影響。再者，雖然我們的仔仔囡囡可能在短時間內未必會有問題，但他（她）們的身體就好像一個計時炸彈，隨時會因為身體功能不能再負苛時便「time's up」爆發。令身體可能會出現可大可小的症狀。添加劑也會產生同樣的效果。

Ethoxyquin 乙氧基奎寧
最常用的防腐劑是 Ethoxyquin（乙氧基奎寧）。這其實是一種抗氧化劑，使用後可防止狗糧變壞，把所謂用新鮮材料造的狗糧保持數年的食用期。我不是化學專家，不懂得分析這物質，但ethoxyquin究竟有幾恐怖??看以下書籍作參考：

● 加拿大一本稱「The Farm Chemical Handbook」可譯為   「農業化學物質手冊」，列 ethoxyquin為「殺蟲藥」

●「Hawley's Condensed Chemical Dictionary 11th Edition」（可譯為「Hawley出版：化學物質精裝字典」）解釋ethoxyquin為有害：含毒素，不宜吞食」

● The Consumers Dictionary of Food Additives（可譯為「有關食物添加劑的消費者字典」）解釋 ethoxyquin為「黃色的抗氧化液體。曾證實令初生老鼠肝臟生腫瘤」

● Ethoxyquin以deccoquin的名稱售賣，包裝上印有很明顯的骷髏頭標誌，寫明「小心—毒藥」。


各位fans，今次講解完ethoxyquin，快些查看你的愛犬現時食的狗糧有沒有這防腐劑。但要提醒大家，美國法例（好可能加拿大的法例也一樣），規定假如生產商使用化學防腐劑，必須在包裝的材料清單上列明，但如果生產商在購入生產材料（例如動物脂肪、穀物）時，其中已含有化學物質，他們就不必加以說明。這法例令人感到無奈。

化學物質對狗狗無益且有害，應遠離!!

除了ethoxyquin之外，我希望提醒各位Fans，狗糧生產商經常用的防腐劑還有兩種，可能你們都聽聞過，就是BHA (Butylated HydroxyAnisole和 BHT (Butylated HydroxyToluene)。BHA和 BHT是抗氧化劑，可防止含脂肪的成份腐壞。這兩種成份一直被懷疑是致癌物質，亦在書籍上看到曾在實驗中證實會損害肝臟、影響新陳代謝和增加膽固醇有直接關係，我不會在這�堬`入分析這兩種成份，只想帶給各位Fans一個message：化學物質對狗狗無益且有害，應遠離!!  

添加劑

話說有些狗糧生產商為了補償質素差的材料和改善產品的味道和賣相，不惜加入添加劑（additives），吸引消費者。從可笑的角度看，狗糧的外表（例如看似完整的一塊鮮肉，呈鮮紅色等）根本上是為狗狗的主人而設，始終掏腰包的是我們，不是狗狗們！所以生產商務必要把產品外表做到「good enough to buy」至真！當Fans日後看到我揭露生產材料的某些真相後，就會徹底明白使用添加劑對生產商是如何重要！

究竟食物添加劑包括甚麼？人造色素→Red Dye 40（我自己譯為「色素血色40號」）是其中一種，作用是令狗糧有鮮肉的外表。事實上狗狗根本不會注意食物的顏色（至少我認為不會），改善外表的「化�蛦N」完全是為人類而設，全無意思!!另外還有sodium nitrite（硝酸鈉），這成份十分有用，可防止狗糧褪色和令肉類製品保持新鮮的血紅色。這兩種成份在實驗室的動物身上曾證明與致癌和誕生有缺陷的後代有關。

其實添加劑的種類必定比我認識的多，不能盡錄，只想重覆同一個message：狗狗不應食含化學成份的狗糧，天然最重要。

「糖」

在完結這篇稿之前，想揭露semi-moist半濕糧最常用的一種成份，就是「糖」也！糖不但可以防止狗糧被細菌感染，亦對狗狗十分吸引。從書籍看過有些半濕糧的糖份高達25％ (1/4)，十分恐怖。試想像每日飲很甜很甜的咖啡或奶茶（例如一杯有10粒糖），長期食用對身體一定會有影響。但半濕糧的賣相的確很吸引，感覺上是餵新鮮的牛肉、漢堡扒、雞塊給狗狗吃，事實上是否如你所想像的呢……？下回分解。

上幾次己和各位 Fans提及市面上有些狗糧均加入一些非天然的成份, 幫產品「化�菕v兼「加味」, 用外表吸引你購買, 濃烈的味道就吸引你的愛犬食。 可能一般人會認為狗糧加入添加劑、化學防腐劑、大量糖和鹽等的成份問題不大,但狗糧生產商需要使用這些成份提高產品的賣相和味道, 其中最令人懷疑就是材料的質素和來源。

一般狗糧的廣告給人的印象就是產品用「上等的鮮肉」和疏菜、豰纇等泡制而成， 真相.....當然以下所說的並不表示所有的狗糧都一樣, 但有可能你的愛犬現在食的.....

  寵物屍體做狗糧材料？

記得很久以前已聽人提及狗糧是用「動物死屍」做材料, 但聽後一笑置之, 一來當時沒有養狗 (沒有興趣知道真相), 二來感覺上認為狗糧生產商應該是愛錫動物的人, 不會做出這樣恐怖的行為。 直至我開始養狗後, 閱讀資料書籍, 才發覺利用動物的死屍或殘餘物在某些狗糧制造過程中一點也不出奇。

各位 Fans 有聽過 「4D」嗎？ 4D 就是我從書籍中看到形容狗糧材料某些主要來源的簡稱, 即是 Dead (巳死)、Diseased (有病)、Dying (垂死) 和 Disabled (殘廢)。 你們無需想像, 我會逐一說明。

1 Dead 巳死
2 Disease 有病
3 Dying 垂死
4 Disabled 殘廢

  被人道毀滅的動物去了那�堙H

以下說的都是美國和加拿大的情況。 在香港, 一旦寵物不幸地需要由獸醫進行人道毀滅, 我相信寵物的屍體一般都會被墳化。

但根據美國一名獸醫所說, 寵物食糧使用寵物做材料是「正常」的做法。 事實上在美國和加拿大有公司專門到各獸醫診所、動物收容所 等地方收集 4D 的屍體 (這類公司稱為「Collectors」, 我譯為「收集商」), 再轉交給其它一連串的「處理站」, 最終材料會到達寵物食糧生產商的門前, 成為產品中動物油脂 (animal fat)、肉塊 (meat meal) 和骨粉 (bone meal) 的主要成份。

以上所說的「處理站」, 在加拿大由漁農處 (Ministry of Agriculture) 正式發牌稱為:-

Receiving plants 譯為「處理商」
Brokers 譯為「中間人」
Rendering plants 譯為「加工廠」

這些「處理站」的工作, 我會在下半部逐一給你們介紹。

說明「屍體處理過程」前, 先講一些恐怖事實 - 在美國和加拿大, 把寵物「加工」並不違法  一間「加工廠」的前度僱員指出該公司每日「加工」約10,000 至 30,000 磅的狗和貓的屍體, 這份量只佔每日總量 250,000 至 500,000 磅的牛、家禽、肉檔和屠場的剩餘物資和其它物質的一少部份

在加拿大Quebec ( 魁北克 ) 的一間「加工廠」, 每星期「加工」11噸的狗和貓的屍體

根據 New Y ork Times (紐約時報) 在 1997 年的報導, Los Angeles( 洛杉磯 )市每個月「加工」200噸被人道毀滅的狗和貓



「屍體處理過程」

第一部
「收集商」從獸醫診所、動物收容所、動物園等地方收集 4D 的屍體, 亦會被不同的市政府聘用收集在馬路上被車撞死的(大型)動物, 在野外被殺或死去的禽畜。

第二部
「處理商」把某些屍體剝皮拆骨, 和可售賣制造動物或寵物食糧的「肉」分開。

第三部
「中間人」收購「處理商」的出品, 以最高價賣給「加工廠」。

第四部
「加工廠」的工序, 我會下次介紹, 一定會令各位 Fans 對狗糧的質素重新估計。

To be honest, I really don't know!!! I can tell which brand is better than which brand but I never know which one is the best. However, I know "Hill's" is the worst.

Specifically, I am sending emails to all manfacturers to clarify their fish favour formula. Hoping that it won't be another bad news to us, to play safe, you may exclude fish favour dog food from your selection for the time being. Will let you know once my research is concluded.

Well, no matter how good of the commerical dry food, you can't avoid preservatives and chemicals. Of course, my comment will be homemade diet always better than commerical dry dog food. The concern is you have to learn/design the recipes to maintain the nutritional balance. For dry dog food... here are the list so far still safe.

And I do agree "Hill's" is the worst and Iams is the most terrible pet food company.

記得有一些網友曾經問過以上這個問題

真心話，個人認為這些都是巧立名目，大同小異的東西，純屬推廣市場的一種策略，包裝嘛，任何人都可以馬虎找間小工廠生產十款八款類似成份之狗糧，然后在包裝印隻史納莎、金毛、松鼠狗等等，然后再揾個高手廣告撰寫人寫些似模似樣的介紹，就說是什麽什麼專用狗糧了，一般人見到包裝上有自己在養的狗隻圖樣，心底里巳覺親切及特別喜歡了，這樣就相信了這一 "專用狗糧"

以Royal Canin老虎狗專用糧為例，它的成份衹是非常大路、非常普道的材料，我看不出為什麼老虎狗食咗又特別好？特別專用？

好似佢哋嗰隻><shire 28™ Formula有corn gluten meal，就喺啲完全冇益但總算冇害的平價成份，市面上除了它之外，就衹有Iams的平價 cheap cheap Excel Chunks/Mini Chunks用

Corn Gluten
I have not been able to locate an official definition of this product, but since it is contained in only one formulation of one manufacturer (Excel Chunks/Mini Chunks), I assume it is the same as "Corn Gluten Meal".

An inexpensive by-product of human food processing which offers very little nutritional value and serves mainly to bind food together. It is not a harmful ingredient but should be avoided simply for its poor nutritional value and quality.

所以搞幾隻所謂「專用狗糧」出來，並不增加成本，反而在市場形像令一般人會有錯覺，覺得他們很是專業，外國狗糧市場極大，可說是山大斬了有柴。

biotin是水溶性维生素其中一種(vitamin B8), 因為係水溶性,並不會積存於體內. 應該不存在過量服用o既問題. 在營養學o既角度出發,有一定育髮及生髮效果. 不過,大家要注意维生素並不是食物,而係存在於食物中的一種物質. 舉例- 我地會到超市買橙食去吸取维生素C, 但我地唔會去超市買维生素C, 反而要去藥房買维生素C. 因為這些是人造维生素, 一種經提煉而造成o既化學物質(石油o既副產品). 所以當大家進食维生素�黈伬�,其實是一堆堆�鴾ずヰ娃�. 我相信這些以biotin為主要成份o既育毛或美毛粉會有佢一定�黈蘆G. 作為短期美容目的,無可厚非. 但長期食用便要當心一點.

如果想狗狗能夠長期擁有亮澤�鴾翽v, 我想適量omega 3 supplement係唔錯�嚙嚝�.

魚肝油是非常不適合狗狗攝取的，因為內含大量維生素A,D，長期餵飼魚肝油，狗狗是會中毒的，請看以下美國狗糧權威 Mordanna原文：


NOTE: While Omega-6 fatty acids are required for good health, excessive amounts of some of them, especially Arachidonic acid, are actually harmful, that is the reason a balance needs to be established. Oversupplementation of Omega-3's to an extent of causing health problems is virtually impossible, but if you give a fish oil supplement, be very careful to check whether it contains any vitamin A and D (cod liver oil does for example!) - they are already present in commercial dog foods and excessive amounts will result in toxicity. Consult your veterinarian before you start feeding any supplements.

If your feeding kibble don't give any fish liver oils...give fish body oils. What I do is give Sardines (canned) a few times a week with kibble, or Salmon (canned wild) with the food. I also throw in flax oil, hemp oil or crused flax seeds a few times a week. With fish liver oils the Vitamin A content is high added to the high vitamin A content of kibble can be in toxic levels.

無論幾好,幾天然又或者幾差嘅狗糧都好. 一定要做防腐,一定會有防腐劑(Preservatives). 分别在於用嘅係天然防腐劑(Natural Preservatives), 人造防腐劑(Artificial Preservatives)定係化學防腐劑(Chemical Preservatives).

天然防腐劑 e.g. chicken fat, canola oil
人造防腐劑 e.g. animal fat, poultry fat
化學防腐劑 e.g. BHA, BHT

皮膚敏感
要知皮膚敏感, 食物並非是唯一的誘因, 環境因素, 例如塵蟎也是一種極普遍導致狗隻皮膚敏感的主因. 單從食物食析, 狗糧中最易引起敏感的並不是肉. 所有食物包括狗糧中嘅營養可分成六大類, 水,疍白質,脂肪,碳水化合物,維生素同礦物質. 舉例一隻狗糧中的成份
疍白質 25%
脂肪 10%
水份 10%
維生素同礦物質 10%
剩餘的便是碳水化合物 100-25-10-10-10 = 45%, 可想而知碳水化合物在商業狗糧中佔絕大部份.

碳水化合物有何問題
碳水化合物是熱量的主要來源，主要可分為單一碳水化合物(Simple Carbohydrate)及複合碳水化合物(Complex Carbohydrate)。 單一碳水化合物比複合碳水化合物更易被身體吸收

單一碳水化合物主要存在於精製糖類（如：蔗糖、蜜糖、糖果等）、蔬菜以至奶類製品。複合碳水化合物則主要存在於澱粉質食物中，例如殼物、麵包、馬鈴薯、麥、豆、蔬菜。

殼物(grain)是複合碳水化合物(Complex Carbohydrate), 於消化過程中會與胰島素產生一定的生化及生理問題.  直接影嚮血液中的血糖水平。 現在醫學界的研究發現，大量的低消化性複合碳水化合物經長時間積聚, 不單對免役糸统做成負荷，吃太多碳水化合物，會導致代謝問題，要代謝這些醣類，就必須增加胰島素的分泌，但是分泌過多的胰島素，卻會影響健康。這病理性改變當然會導致肥胖。長期攝取大量碳水化合物，還可能讓胰島素不夠用，導致糖尿病。更嚴重是影嚮類荷爾蒙(eicosanoid)的生產, 高血壓, 血管, 腎臟, 肝, 和心臟病疾病便相繼出現。在許多情況下最後更變成癌症。

前陣子在勝利道買了一包在05年6月出廠的 CANIDAE 正版正貨的狗糧，很奇怪Boyboy嗅了一下就走開，一點也不吃，Smarty 吃了一大半，(Samrty 一般比Boyboy胃口好多了) 但Smarty笫二天卻肚疴了.......第二天我還有點不以為意，但連貪吃的Smarty也衹吃了小許，我不禁有點奇怪，我打開狗糧包裝袋小心聞了很久，發覺聞的味道跟我上個月買錯的水貨 CANIDAE 很不同，而且今次的正版正貨可說有種頗難聞的臭味，昨天急致電總代理，有位陳小姐�p斷說他們的貨從沒收到任何投訴，(真想問她，沒有收到任何投訴，是不是代表100%所有的 正版正貨 CANIDAE 就一定沒問題？) 後來她建議我去博美犬舍換取另一包，說他們日後會補回給博美犬舍，去到博美犬舍態度非常合作，換回來是05年11月出廠的 CANIDAE ，他們說是總代理剛送來的新貨，回家後打開細心聞了很久，聞的味道跟我上個月買錯的水貨 CANIDAE 一樣，亦沒有了那股難聞的味道，才敢再餵了狗狗.....

整件事覺得總代理欠缺認真的態度，最初祇是�p斷說他們的貨從沒收到任何投訴，及後更推說是博美犬舍貯藏不好，更有點覺得我沒事找事搞的語氣......為什麼他們不立刻派員檢查我這包可能有問題的狗糧？為什麼一定說博美犬舍貯藏不好？難道不會有機會在整個運送個程出了問題嗎？不能有其它人為或意外問題嗎？作為總代理，收到投訴，就叫消費者自行拿去寵物店換糧，如此馬虎了事，他們並沒有正視問題的嚴重性，實在毫無專業態度及精神。

再者，希望各位選用 CANIDAE 的版友，如正在餵飼05年6月出廠的 CANIDAE 正版正貨的狗糧，小心留意一下；如在這一段時期將會選購 CANIDAE 最好指定要05年11月出廠的，反正新鮮的新貸巳到；當然希望我那包 "有問題" 05年6月出廠的 CANIDAE 正版正貨的狗糧衹是個別"不幸"事件。

I think it is not a stand-alone case. In fact, we hv same kinds of experience from other dog dog friends as well. Approx  3-4 occurence in last 2 months. I didn’t find out the details as my dog is not eating canidae. However, noticed that canidae has changed their formula around mid-Oct, but it is not a significant change. It’s better to pay special attention on canidae.

提供一个canidae的信息。canidae开袋有异味的问题这边也有，有北京深圳的朋友提到过，他们都是从canidae.com.cn那里拿的乐天行货。不过我觉得奇怪的是，我家的狗狗一直在食canidae，第一袋忘记看日期了，第二袋和第三袋的袋子都在，生产日期是今年的7月，barcode都是6 40461 01040，应该是一批货。这三袋没有发现这个问题。不知道卡比出现的这个状况究竟是什么原因导致的。多关注一些canidae的袋子是不是能从中找出规律。

(怎么觉得好似在挑选电脑CPU……，那个才和出厂日期有关系……  -_-#)
